If you have ever been on a diet where you have to count your macros you already know how hard this is. Did you hear about the keto diet? No! Constantly checking the carbs, fats, and protein in whatever you are eating, then logging it all. It can be a tiring task to do, but beauty takes work.
So, what happens when you love a glass of wine every once in a while, but you can only consume up to 20 carbs a day? If you follow our guide, your diet won’t even be affected. It also works for people who simply don’t want to drink wines that are overloaded with sugar and carbs.
What Kind of Keto Diet Friendly Wines are There?
So, you want to know what your options are for low-carb wines. Here are the best ones.
Reds
Red wines with little sugar are generally harder to find, as they aren’t supposed to be dry. Their taste should be fruity and intense (but mostly sweet), which is hard to make without carbohydrates. But just for you, we did some extensive research.
Josh Cabernet Sauvignon
Josh Cabernet Sauvignon is the top choice when you want wine that isn’t overloaded with sugar. It has about 4 grams of carbs in a serving (a tiny bit less, actually), so it’s perfect for the keto diet. There’s also only 120 calories in it, so you don’t have to worry about going over your limit by drinking a couple of glasses.
The best part about it is that it has a very juice-like flavor, so it isn’t nearly as dry as you would expect. The taste of it is quite surprising but can be great for those who miss drinking fruity things regularly. Some people have said that it even has a liquor-like taste, which is great for such a low carb content.
And another thing… A bottle only costs around $11! This is by far one of the best wine for this price for your Keto diet!
Dry Farm Wines
This one is a much more expensive choice, but mostly because you can only buy the original ones in packs. A pack that has 6 bottles costs $159. This can seem like way too much at first, but if you think about it, it’s only $26,5. Not too bad. Especially when you consider the benefits.
The macros of it are astounding. Dry Farm Wines tests its product in special laboratories to make sure there’s not more than 1 gram of sugar in each liter. That’s crazy!
They make their wines this way because they believe that sugar is the #1 enemy of health. Which you might think is a bit too much, but it’s really not. All of us are basically on a carbohydrate diet constantly, so Dry Farm Wines might be the way to go if you want to change that.
And what’s also great is that the aroma of this wine is absolutely perfect. It doesn’t matter that this wine only has a little bit of sugar, it’s still very sweet.
Amarone Della Valpolicella
This is another interesting choice for the keto diet. It only contains 2,5 grams of carbohydrates in a serving. But thankfully, that can’t be felt on the actual product, as it’s not dry and bitter. The aroma of it is different from everything else because of the techniques used while making the wine.
You can feel cherry liqueur, chocolate, plum and cinnamon in this drink, so it’s interesting, to say the least. These tastes are also very intense.
So after all that, no wonder that the price can go quite high. The everyday Amarone wines usually cost around $12-15, but can easily go above $80 if you want something more eccentric.
Nevertheless, this drink is worth its’ price.
Whites
In the case of white wines, you don’t even have to look up specific brands. It’s very likely that you can just go to your local store and pick one up. White wines generally have a lower carbohydrate content, so it’s not likely that you will find something that has above 6 grams of carbs in a serving.
Chardonnay
The name is known to everyone. It’s a pretty established brand, as it has a nice taste and fair prices. But did you know that a serving only has about 3,5 grams of carbohydrates? For such an everyday drink, we would’ve expected more. But thankfully if this is your preferred drink, then you don’t even need to change your preferences.
But the greatest thing is that you can get a bottle for as low as 9$. That’s a perfectly fair price for such a product. It has a fine and sweet taste (especially if it’s from Germany), but still only has the bare minimum amount of sugar.
Marsanne
This French wine can be a surprise to anyone who hasn’t heard about the brand. It has around 4 grams of carbohydrates in each serving, which isn’t that impressive, but considering how high-end this wine is… Well, you might change your mind.
It is actually really impressive that there are only that many carbs. Marsanne wines tend to be very fruity, which would suggest that they have a ton of glucose (fruit sugar) in them, but surprisingly there isn’t. Marsanne somehow managed to create a wine that can work for those who are on a keto diet but still remain really sweet.
But let’s look at the price. If you want to buy an everyday bottle then it starts around 15$. Not too bad, right? Well, if you plan on getting something fancier then prepare to spend hundreds, because Marsanne’s more expensive wines can easily reach that price.
Brut Champagne
You probably haven’t heard this name before, but that’s because this wine isn’t really all that special. It has around 2,5 grams of carbohydrates in a serving, but because of this, it’s very dry. So if you prefer your drinks bitter then you have found the one.
This drink is said to be so dry that you must have something to consume along with it, otherwise, it will dry out your entire mouth. That’s where this wine gets its’ name from. “Brut” refers to the dryness of this beverage.
And the price? Well, if you don’t love bitter tastes to death, then you will likely be appalled. It starts somewhere around $25 for a bottle. Yes, it can be quite brutal, but this wine is sparkling, and we all know that those cost much more, even if their taste isn’t nearly as exquisite.
But Should I Really Drink Alcoholic Beverages on a Keto Diet?
The answer is obviously no, the lower you keep your carbs the easier it is to keep yourself in ketosis. We all know that the threshold for some can be lower than 20 grams of carbohydrates, so it can really mess up your diet if you want to reach those 20 grams exactly.
If you can, leave alcoholic drinks out of your diet, just to make sure you don’t accidentally get out of ketosis. Unless you are absolutely sure that you don’t go over your limit. If that’s the case then count your calories and macros and have at it. A glass of wine a day will likely not hurt.
The keto diet is pretty hard to restrict yourself in today’s world. Especially so if you like alcoholic drinks. But this doesn’t have to be a struggle, you don’t need to fit in a glass of wine each day if you choose low-carb drinks.
In the end, it would be best if you completely skipped the alcohol. But in some cases, you can sneak in a glass or two without getting out of ketosis. Count your macros and bottoms up!
